Gender and Sexuality Archive
It is not surprising that women’s contributions to History continues to be silenced, rendered invisible and unimportant everywhere in the world. While we believe that we are a gender equal society and ‘our’ women are treated better in comparison to the mainland, the story remains the same in the Darjeeling-Sikkim Himalayas.
To ‘undo’ this silencing, we at The Confluence Collective are excited to curate and launch our Gender and Sexuality Archive. This will be an archive fully dedicated to celebrating untold histories-of women, sexual minorities and Others- with the larger purpose of re-imagining histories- through the prisms of these silenced voices.
Our stories matter and we now take this bold step to re-write history - inclusively. We will be collecting visual and oral stories in curating this archive. The pursuit is to develop a repository of localised knowledge and generate a much needed discourse on gender and sexuality in the Hills through a rigorous and critical engagement with literature, popular culture, history and politics. As part of this effort at curating and sharing knowledge, we will be facilitating reading sessions featuring stories, memoirs, personal narratives, anecdotes, and more around these themes.
यो कुनै अचम्म मान्ने कुरा होइन कि एउटी नारीले गरेका योगदानहरू इतिहासमा सधैं नै मौनताका बादलहरुले घेरेका हुन्छन् अनि यस्ता कुराहरुलाई संसारले नै महत्व दिँदैन।
तर हामी विश्वास गर्छौं के हामी समानताको समाजलाई मान्छौँ अनि हाम्रो भेगका नारीहरूलाई अरु ठाउँहरूभन्दा चाहिँ राम्रो दर्जाले नै राखिएको छ। तर इतिहासका योगदानहरूको मौनता हाम्रो पहाड अनि सिक्किममा भने उस्तै छ।
यस मौनतालाई हटाउन हामी The Confluence Collective ले कदम चालेका छौं अनि हामी यो मौनतालाई तोड्न आतुर अनि धेरै उत्साहित छौँ। केवल नारीहरूको नसुनेका कथाहरूलाई एउटा आवाज बन्न आतुर छौँ।
यो संग्रह चाहिँ हामीले केवल नारीहरूको नसुनिएको कथा, मौन भई गाभिएको योगदानका इतिहासहरु ,नदेखेका कैयौँ मर्महरूलाई यस्ता मौनताहरूलाई तोडेर यस्ता नारीहरूको आवाजहरूलाई समस्त भेगमा गुञ्जमान बनाउन संकल्प साँचेर अघि बढेका छौं।
हाम्रा कथाहरूका पनि मान्छ अनि हामीले यो ठोस कदम उठाउने निर्णय पनि गरे। हामीले यस्ता नारीको दुवै चलचित्र जस्तै गरी अनि व्याख्या गरे पनि उहाँहरूको कथालाई एउटा मञ्च दिन पाउने निर्णय पनि लियौ। हाम्रो खोज एक उन्नत सामाजिक ज्ञानहरूलाई बटुलेर सम्मानताको अर्थहरूलाई समस्त पहाडमा कठोर अनि आलोचत्मक तरिकाले फैलाउनु छ। साहित्य, संस्कृति, इतिहास अनि राजनीतिलाई एकै साथमा लिएर।
यो सङ्घर्ष गरी यस्तो नसुनिने योगदानका इतिहासहरूलाई तपाईँहरूसित बाट्नु तपाईहरु माझ सुनाउनु यसको एउटा बेग्लै लेखहरू ,प्रकाशित गर्नु आफैले साँचो कथालाई पढ्नु ,अनि अरु धेरै धेरै कुराहरू तपाईहरु समक्ष लि यसरी आउनु हाम्रो संकल्प अनि उद्देश्य दुइटै भएको छ।
We invite you to share the stories of the women in your lives mothers, aunts, grandmothers, and others who have long lived in the shadows of family histories. This is an effort to critically engage with questions of gender, sexuality, identity, and the layered realities of life in the Darjeeling-Sikkim Himalayas. We are particularly interested in personal narratives that explore these intersections in nuanced and meaningful ways.
