The Basics of Photography Workshop - Namchi, Sikkim

In 2019, The Confluence Collective (TCC) hosted the Basics of Photography Workshop in Namchi, Sikkim. The two-day workshop aimed to introduce participants to the foundational principles of photography, including its history, essential techniques, and practical application. The workshop was designed for individuals who were new to photography or those seeking to strengthen their technical skills and creative approach.

The workshop included a mix of theory and hands-on practice, with a particular focus on understanding camera mechanics, composition, and the artistic potential of photography. Through a blend of lecture-style teaching, a photo walk, and image reviews, participants were given the tools to approach photography with greater confidence and creative intent.

Day 1: Introduction to Photography

The first day of the workshop covered the basics and history of photography, offering participants insight into the evolution of the medium and its cultural significance. Topics included the technical progression of cameras, the importance of understanding light, and an overview of different photographic genres. The focus was on **camera techniques, with instruction on exposure, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and how these elements influence the final image.

Participants also engaged in interactive discussions about the role of photography in storytelling and memory preservation, encouraging them to think about what they wish to capture and communicate through their photographs.

Day 2: Photo Walk and Review

The second day of the workshop offered participants an opportunity for practical application through a photo walk. The group visited the newly opened Kisan Bazaar, a vibrant market space that presented a unique setting for photography. The participants were encouraged to explore the space, capturing its character, the people, and the atmosphere, using the techniques they had learned the previous day. The distinctive environment of the Kisan Bazaar provided a dynamic subject for the photographers, allowing them to experiment with composition, framing, and storytelling through images.

After the photo walk, a review session was held, where participants shared their work and received feedback. This collaborative critique provided valuable insights into how to improve their photographs and approach the editing process.

The workshop attracted a diverse set of participants, both in terms of age and gender. This diversity contributed to a rich exchange of ideas and perspectives, which added depth to the learning experience. The group’s varied backgrounds and interests led to unique interpretations of the subjects they photographed, making the workshop not only a technical learning experience but also a cultural and social one.

1. Introduction to Basic Techniques: Participants gained hands-on experience in understanding camera settings, exposure, and composition, providing a solid foundation for their photographic journey.

2. Understanding Photography’s History and Evolution: A key component of the workshop was understanding how photography has evolved over time and its role in documenting history and personal stories.
